Center of Excellence (COE) for Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers (PCSELs) at Kyoto University

Semiconductor lasers are applied all over modern society, particularly in tele- and data-communications and optical storage. To date, much interest has been devoted toward expanding the utility of semiconductor lasers in such low-power applications, such as by widening their range of operating wavelengths and by improving their modulation speeds. However, the adoption of semiconductor lasers elsewhere, especially in high-power applications such as smart manufacturing and smart mobility, has lagged behind, since these lasers have had difficulty simultaneously achieving the requisite high output powers and high beam qualities (that is, high brightnesses) that can be provided by other lasers, such as gas and fiber lasers.

Now, with the advent of PCSELs, this paradigm is expected to change. PCSELs are currently attracting great attention for their ability to intrinsically achieve the long-sought high brightnesses, as well as various other functionalities, such as on-chip polarization, beam-pattern, and beam-direction controls, that are not easily achieved by other types of lasers without the assistance of bulky external optics. It is to accelerate the research and development of these PCSELs and to implement them widely in society that the COE for PCSELs has been established at Kyoto University.
