Episode 3 — Probate Records #ohiohistory #history #genealogy

Welcome to Brick Walls & Buckeyes.

Episode 3 of the Brown County, Ohio genealogy Shorts series.
Yes, there was a courthouse fire — but probably not the one you'd expect for a county this old. In 1977, an arsonist set fire to the judge's chambers and the north stairwell of the 1851 Greek Revival courthouse. The crime was never solved. Much of the interior, roof, and cupola burned, but the records in the vaults survived.
The citizen-led Brown County Courthouse Reconstruction Association rebuilt the building to its pre-fire condition, and it was rededicated in 1986. Brown County is NOT on FamilySearch's catastrophic record-loss list. Probate records survive from 1817, marriages from 1818, court records from 1818, deeds from 1818. Pre-1908 birth records were not kept by the county — but you can often reconstruct birth dates from guardianship files in the probate record, where minor heirs are named with their ages.
