Michael Pearce was born in 1750 in Essex County, New Jersey, and served as a militiaman during the Revolutionary War. He joined Captain Decidiate Dufun and Colonel Samuel Patton in 1776, stationed near Elizabeth Town Point and Springfield as British forces advanced on New Jersey. Pearce was a minute man, often called to scouting and guard duty under General Maxwell and Captain Benjamin Dunn. After the war he moved to Butler County, Ohio, where he applied for his pension in 1832 at age 82. His story represents the ordinary New Jersey militiaman whose constant readiness helped defend the Revolution’s frontier.
