The Widest Staircase in Suffolk? | National Trust | Melford Hall, Suffolk, UK
Climbing this broad, elegant staircase at Melford Hall feels like walking through layers of history 🏛️
Lining the stairs are striking ceramic urns and vases – including two remarkable Chinese urns taken as booty from the Spanish galleon Santissima Trinidad. The galleon was captured in 1762 by HMS Panther, under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir Hyde Parker I, 5th Baronet (Five times great-grandfather to the current 13th Baronet). Brave to display them right on the stairs, we thought 😧
At the top of the stairs, don’t forget to turn around and take in the portrait of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker – younger brother of the 6th Baronet – who famously led the fleet at Copenhagen with Nelson as his second-in-command. It was during this battle that Nelson memorably raised his telescope to his blind eye and said, “I really do not see the signal,” boldly ignoring Hyde Parker’s order to withdraw and compelling the Danish to surrender 🏳️
Every step here holds a story – if you stop to look 👀
