📜 Stowe is a masterpiece of 18th-century landscape design. Once the vision of Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham, the gardens were crafted by the leading designers of their day – Charles Bridgeman, William Kent, and Capability Brown himself, who lived and worked here for a decade. Every monument carried meaning: from the Temple of Ancient Virtue, with its statues of Homer and Socrates, to the Temple of British Worthies – a Georgian “wall of fame” featuring Shakespeare, Newton, Elizabeth I… and even Cobham’s dog. The gardens declined with the family fortunes in the 20th century, but since 1989 the National Trust has been restoring them to their former splendour, offering visitors 250 acres of lakes, follies, and perfectly framed views.

💚 For us, visiting Stowe felt like stepping into a living painting. Every path revealed something new – a flash of water, a temple rising from the trees, or a vista that stopped us in our tracks. It’s not just beautiful; it’s a place where history, politics, and art all come together in the landscape. We left feeling inspired, a little sunburnt, and more than ready for a cream tea. We can’t recommend it enough.
