Just a 'HUMBLE' 😲 Rothschild Family Country Retreat | National Trust | Ascott, Buckinghamshire, UK
Step into the world of the de Rothschild Family at Ascott Estate in Buckinghamshire — a National Trust treasure with grandeur, art, and peaceful gardens. From the dramatic Venus fountain to the sweeping lawns and secluded sunken garden, this visit is full of surprises!
*No photography is allowed inside the house so please enjoy these exterior shots instead* ☺️🌳
Ascott House began life as a small Jacobean farmhouse thought to date from 1606. It has undergone many changes since then and was transformed into a substantial Edwardian country retreat by Leopold de Rothschild in the 19th century. Today, the house is renowned for its outstanding art collection, elegant interiors, and gardens covering more than 30 acres, and is the only one of the original de Rothschild houses in Buckinghamshire to still be used as a residence by the family.
Thanks to the family’s fascination with collecting, Ascott contains one of the best small picture collections in Britain, including works by Cuyp, Turner, Stubbs and Gainsborough, in addition to an outstanding collection of Chinese ceramics, which were all generously donated to the National Trust in 1949 by Anthony and Yvonne de Rothschild, along with the house, grounds and an endowment.
Garden highlights include the iconic Venus fountain erected in 1891, which inspired similar fountains at both Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and also at Cliveden in Buckinghamshire. A more modern installation, the slate ‘Ascott Circle’ sculpture by Richard Long unveiled in 2006 and situated to the south of the house, helps to establish the gardens as a divine blend of heritage and contemporary creativity.
For us, visiting Ascott was both inspiring and peaceful. Standing by the fountains, gazing across the countryside, and exploring the gardens reminded us why we love sharing these journeys. Each National Trust visit offers something different — a chance to connect with history, nature, and beauty in one place. We hope Ascott inspires you to plan your own visit soon!
