Potiphar's Wife and the Invisible Female Sexual Aggressor - Sam Drysdale
Sam Drysdale, Chaplaincy Assistant at the University of Reading Chaplaincy, discusses the biblical story of Potiphar's wife and Joseph (Genesis 39) and the issue of female perpetrated sexual harassment.
TRIGGER WARNING: these of sexual harassment; sexual assault; false accusation.
This is the second talk in a new "Homebrewed" format of the Café Théologique series which aims to bring theological ideas into the public realm. His presentation lasts 20 minutes and is followed by Q&A from the Zoom audience.
Further details about Café Théologique can be found here: http://www.reading.ac.uk/chaplaincy/cafe-theologique.aspx
Sam posed the following questions to the audience:
Are there other male victims of sexual violence in Scripture, of male or female perpetrators, that we have overlooked?
Have you seen any examples of male victims and females perpetrators being poorly represented in culture?
Are feminist concepts an aid or a hindrance to addressing this issue?
Questions from the floor:
00:26:19 A recent story-line in Eastenders involving a male victim of childhood sexual abuse from a female carer was an interesting treatment of the issues raised.
00:30:13 Shocking statistics from the prisons, but study done in US context -are there any numbers from UK prisons?
00:32:05 What other Biblical examples could you point to?
00:36:31 Is the question of power dynamics in cultural gender systems more of a factor than sexual motivations?
00:38:27 What psychological damage is caused to young male teenagers who have had sex with older experienced women?
00:40:06 Hesitant to read contemporary understandings of relationship/consent back into Biblical stories, although it's an important issue to explore.
