WAGR Thomas Smith and Sons Steam Crane at work (1980)

(I will upload an improved copy soon) This 16mm film was shot by me in the scrapyards at the WAGR Midland Railway Workshops, Midland, Western Australia in 1980. Steam had long since been retired from rail, but this crane, WAGR No. 29, was kept at work. When this film was shot, the crane had recently undergone a complete overhaul including a totally rebuilt boiler by the workshop apprentices. This is probably one of only a very few sequences of film ever shot in the workshops while they were operating. All photography was strictly forbidden as it was still a designated war production site.
