Magnificent Ephesus in Turkey. Ephesus dates back to pre-lonian times. in 334 BC Alexander the Great estabblished democratic government in the city. In 190 BC the Romans defeated Antiochus, and Ephesus passed to Eumenes King of Pergamum. In 133 BC Ephesus and Pergamum became Roman cities. In the first century AD Ephesus was the largest city of the East after Alexandria. St John also came and is said to have written his Gospel there and, according to local belief, Ephesus was the last home of the Virgin Mary. In 262 AD Ephesus and the Temple of Diana were destroyed by the Goths and although the city revived, its former splendour was never restored. By the 15th century It had declined to the status of a village. Today the Town of Selcuk - to give it its present name - is steadily developing.
