Systema: Sparring vs. Slow Practice with Menamy Mitanes
Is there sparring in Systema? The Russian style of martial arts seem to prefer slow practice with a cooperative partner... but why?
I asked Menamy Mitanes of Systema Los Angeles for some answers. To connect with Menamy--
►Menamy's website: https://www.systemalosangeles.com/
►Menamy's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SystemaLA/
►The Academy Beverly Hills: http://www.theacademybeverlyhills.com/
SUMMARY: Menamy points out that full speed sparring can be dangerous... especially when there are no rules, which is how Systema--which is focused on self-defense, not sport--trains.
Slow practice, on the other hand, allows you to relax and feel safe, which can increase your awareness. It also gives you time to experiment with different ways to use your body and different ways to target your partner's body.
Slow practice also means you don't need to wear gloves or protective equipment, which makes training drills feel more realistic.
Of course, while slow practice is a great way for beginners to face fears and build good habits, it's just one stage of training in Systema. At some point, students should test their skills by speeding up and even sparring. When a bad habit appears, slowing down again can help fix it.
So, whatever style you practice, consider slowing down and taking a deeper look at what you're doing and how you're doing it!
