COVID-19 in Newfoundland: Lockdown ordered as St. John's outbreak linked to variant – Feb. 12, 2021
In St. John’s, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief medical officer of health, Andrew Furey, premier of N.L., and John Haggie, minister of health, provide an update on the province’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. Dr. Fitzgerald announces that the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 in the St. John’s area involves the highly transmissible B.1.1.7 variant, known as the U.K. variant. She also announces that level 5 public-health measures will be implemented province-wide in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.
