MPs scrum on interim ethics commissioner's resignation, Volkswagen deal – April 21, 2023

MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as they convene for the daily question period in the House of Commons. Conservative ethics critic Michael Barrett comments on the resignation of interim ethics commissioner Martine Richard, who is Liberal cabinet minister Dominic LeBlanc's sister-in-law.

Barrett and his caucus colleague Marilyn Gladu are asked about the federal government providing between $8 to $13.2 billion in subsidies for Volkswagen to build its North American electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in St. Thomas, Ontario.

NDP MP Lindsay Mathyssen responds to questions about the Volkswagen agreement, leaked Pentagon documents on Canada's defence spending commitments, and plans to reopen Wellington Street in Ottawa. The street was closed to traffic in late January 2022 due to the "Freedom Convoy" protest in the city's downtown area.

Liberal MPs Greg Fergus and Chris Bittle are also asked about reopening Wellington Street. Fergus comments as well on the resignation of the interim ethics commissioner.
