36 HOURS TRAPPED in a HURRICANE! Real Life Story - STORM IANOS 'Medicane' Hits KEFALONIA

This video is slightly different to our usual happy-go-lucky travel adventures.

In this video, things go a bit wrong; after arriving in Kefalonia we find ourselves trapped inside our rooftop apartment for 36 hours due to a hurricane - termed a medi-cane due to it being a hurricane in the mediterranean (where hurricanes don’t normally occur) starting to feel like we have a real knack for choosing the wrong time to travel anywhere. We did check the weather forecast before we arrived and it said a few stormy days then back to sunshine. No where did it mention a HURRICANE that would destroy the island, tear down structures and cause power outages for days and weeks in some parts.

We were unable to collect our hire car on the Friday morning as planned because it was impossible to make the 20 minute walk from our apartment to the hire car place due to the heavy rainfall and 120km an hour winds from the hurricane. The government sent emergency warning messages to all our phones and no businesses were open as no one could leave their houses.

We hadn’t even had a chance to do a proper food shop yet as we planned to do it that day once we got our car. Thankfully we grabbed a few bits of food when we had first arrived off the bus in Argostoli so we ate cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner for almost 2 days!

In addition to losing electricity, wifi and running water to be able to shower, we also found our apartment was not at all hurricane proof, it began to flood as water came in from all angles, our equipment was getting wet so as the hurricane moved around us causing water to come in from different directions, we had to move our electronics around our small studio throughout the night in order to keep it all dry.

After a very sleepless night due to crazy loud noises and technology/water tetris, we finally got rescued around 5.30pm by our accommodation hosts as they picked us up in their car and took us back to Argostoli, where there was an apartment that had a little bit of electricity so we could eat and take a shower at last! We were so relieved to be out of our leaky, swamped apartment, but the move wasn’t easy and the roads were like rivers!

Our second night during the hurricane was a lot more peaceful than the first, the new apartment was way more weather and sound proof so we woke up feeling refreshed and so pleased to finally see dry skies and a much calmer scene in Kefalonia. We walk down into Argostoli and find some of the aftermath of storm Ianos.
