Avoid these Mistakes when Learning the Handstand!
Embarking on the journey to mastering the handstand? Let me share some insights from my own experience.
Firstly, one of the most common pitfalls is relying too much on momentum. I remember when I first started, I'd kick up with so much force that I'd often overshoot or lose control mid-air. It took me a while to learn the importance of controlled movements.
Another crucial lesson was about arm positioning. Initially, I'd kick up with slightly bent arms, thinking it would give me more stability. But I soon realized that straightening my arms not only improved my balance but also helped distribute my weight more evenly.
Then there's the matter of shoulder opening. It's easy to overlook, but it's the foundation of a solid handstand. I learned that by actively pushing my shoulders towards my ears, I could create a more stable base to balance on.
Engaging the lower body was another game-changer for me. Tensing my glutes and maintaining a posterior pelvic tilt not only helped me hold the handstand longer but also prevented my lower back from arching uncomfortably.
And finally, one of the habits I had to break was the instinct to walk when I started losing balance. It's a natural reaction, but it often leads to overcompensation and makes it harder to regain stability.
