Finally the day had arrived to jet off on an exotic holiday to the Caribbean, long overdue! This holiday had been booked for years in advanced and changed so many times, dates & destination. Eventually we were set on this date for Jamaica and it actually happened.
A disappointing start to the trip with huge queues at check in & security in Manchester, as well as being delayed by 90 minutes before the it had even began. Once onboard a very full flight, in fact completely full. Not a single empty seat onboard the crew told me. We pushed back from Manchester's new Terminal 2 and taxied for departure from RWY23R. Pushed back at 11:25, instead of 9:45. A very grey, wet day in Manchester, so once airborne more or less straight into the cloud cover but wasn't long before we broke out on top in the sunny skies. Heading west towards Ireland and crossing out into the Atlantic. So not all that much to see until the last hour or so of the flight once over the beautiful Bahamas & crossing Cuba.
Now my overall experience onboard with TUI, I have to say wasn't great. I know they're a charter airline and you get what you pay for but I have to say I was disappointed. It took over 2 hours in flight before we were offered a drink and the meal wasn't served for over 3 & a half hours in! We were halfway over the Atlantic before getting any food which I've never experienced. Extremely slow service. Not only that but there was no choice of meal, they only offer one (most carriers offer 2 choices even in economy). The screen in the seat next to mine was reset twice and my seat didn't recline at all as the button was broken. Any snacks or drinks offered between the meal services were not complimentary and needed to be bought. Legroom was pretty poor. Entertainment system: There is no interactive map. You cannot choose what view to look at, it just circulates through them all. If you want more films or to play games or listen to music on the screen you have to pay for an upgrade on that too. Finally something I noticed that I've never experienced on other carriers is the PA's. I noticed this when flying shorthaul with TUI in September to Greece. They are constantly on the PA. Throughout the flight, constant interruptions for them to make announcements about the bar services, about arrival, about purchasing food & drink, duty free, turbulence, disinfection, about mask wearing, about what toilets to use, about crossing bulkhead seats etc etc. There was announcements all the time, constantly interrupting everyone trying to rest or watch films.
Overall I wasn't impressed and certainly made me appreciate the service offered by other longhaul carriers I regularly fly with like Virgin & BA.
Something else I have to point out, which is nothing to do with TUI, but with 787's in general. I've seen this mentioned by many people on social media before as well. The windows create an awful yellow tinge on camera. I tried various different shutter speeds to try and reduce it but it simply wouldn't work, that and the sun reflecting off the wing. So apologies for the strange colouring in places while filming out the window.
Anyway, I'll stop complaining now...

There you have it. Sadly lots of things that made the flight quite tedious. But would it stop me choosing TUI in the future? Probably not. The overall holiday experience was fantastic. Just the flights were a bit of let down.
