Miguel León-Portilla and the Work of Eternal Return: Philosophy, Visions, Justice. David Carrasco.

In tribute to anthropologist and historian Miguel León-Portilla, historian of religions Davíd Carrasco will give an illustrated lecture on the transformative scholarship of this Mexican sabio, one year after his passing. The session will include a discussion on Portilla’s insightful works on Nahuatl philosophy and archaeology, cultural justice for indigenous peoples, and his book Visión de los Vencidos: Relaciones indígenas de la conquista (published in English as The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico), which translates Nahuatl-language accounts of the Spanish conquest into Spanish and English respectively.
Davíd Carrasco is Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America at Harvard University. He is a Mexican- American historian of religions with particular interest in the religious dimensions of Latino experience, Mesoamerican cities as symbols, and the Mexican-American borderlands. He is editor-in-chief of the award-winning three-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures as well as an award-winning educator. Carrasco has also received the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, which is the highest honor the Mexican government gives to a foreign national.

En honor al antropólogo e historiador Miguel León-Portilla, el experto en historia de las religiones Davíd Carrasco dará una conferencia ilustrada acerca de la erudición transformadora de este sabio mexicano, al cumplirse un año de su fallecimiento. La sesión abordará el esclarecedor trabajo de León-Portilla sobre la arqueología y filosofía náhuatl, la justicia cultural para los indígenas, así como su obra Visión de los Vencidos: Relaciones indígenas de la conquista (publicada en inglés con el título The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico), que traduce –al español y al inglés respectivamente– relatos en lengua náhuatl de la conquista española.
Davíd Carrasco es Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America en Harvard University. La investigación de este catedrático mexicano-americano de historia de las religiones se centra principalmente en la dimensión religiosa de la experiencia latina, la naturaleza simbólica de las ciudades mesoamericanas y las zonas fronterizas entre Estados Unidos y México. Es Editor General de la galardonada Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures, compuesta de tres volúmenes, y también ha sido premiado por su labor docente. Asimismo, Carrasco ha recibido la Orden Mexicana del Águila Azteca, la condecoración más importante que concede el gobierno mexicano a ciudadanos de otros países.
