Amprius Technologies
First, Amprius Technologies was formed by a group of people at Stanford University seeking to create a battery technology that could mitigate some of the most glaring issues with modern batteries. So after years of research, tests, and development, Amprius came into being.
And using a few of their patented technologies, they claim up to a hundred percent increase in the capacity, a multi-fold increase in charging speed, and a massive increase in lifetime and durability over that.
And their secret? Getting rid of carbon.
Now don't get me wrong, carbon is excellent, it powers you, me, and literally every living thing in the world, and for the longest time, it was also at the heart of all Lithium-Ion cells.
That's because in conventional lithium-ion batteries, the anode, one of the three constituents of a battery, is basically made of carbon.
This carbon is in the form of graphite, and while it's served us more than well for a really long time, as our energy storage needs have increased, graphite seems to have reached its energy density limit with the advent of electric vehicles.
And so researchers all-around had spent a lot of time looking for a solution to this carbon problem.
And luckily, there already exists a material with electronic properties very similar to carbon, and what's more, it's already one of the most commonly utilized metals out there.
That's right, you chemistry nerds are correct; the answer to this problem was:
Silicon Tech
Silicon is an element that has a larger mass than carbon but has the same number of electrons in its shells.
This means that it has a more significant attraction to other electrons due to the weight, making its energy-bearing capacity incredible, nearly by order of 10 times in most cases.
And it's also compatible with existing technologies where carbon is used.
So if it's that simple, why haven't all other companies been using silicon anyway? Let's find out!
