The year 2020 didn't just turn out exactly as we've always liked the Earth. But it proved to be momentous in space.

We all know that 2020 was a no-good, terrible, terrifying, turbulent year to be remembered for the coronavirus pandemic and the polarizing election. But for space enthusiasts, it was actually quite a positive year, offering some encouraging news in the grim headlines of sickness, economic distress, and protest.

SpaceX's ambitious satellite-based broadband Internet service, Starlink, is potentially the fastest-growing division within the space business at the moment. In 2020, SpaceX deployed 16 Starlink satellite batches and launched beta services in North America.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has set the high target of launching 48 Falcon missions this year. This means that the company would have to fly a rocket almost every week, not counting experiments on non-Falcon projects, such as Starship.

SpaceX has scheduled its second operating ISS flight, Crew-2, for the spring, to send four astronauts from Florida's Kennedy Space Center. The third mission, Crew-3, is planned for the fall.

2021 is going to be a crucial year for SpaceX's Starship, a massive spacecraft that will one day transport humans to the moon, Mars and beyond.

SpaceX already has two new designs, SN9 and SN10, at the launch pad in Boca Chica, Texas. Musk suggested that the two prototypes could fly simultaneously sometime in the coming weeks.

Musk’s idea is that Starship will eventually take up to 100 passengers across the solar system and super fast transcontinental space flights.

In relation to that earlier this year, precisely on 7 January last Thursday, SpaceX, based in Hawthorne, launched its first rocket of the year, sending a Turkish broadcasting satellite into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The launch of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Turkishsat 5A satellite was scheduled for 5:28 p.m. California Time.

The satellite in orbit is the first of two to provide broadcasting services and enhanced internet services for Turkey and the Middle East, as well as parts of Africa and Southern Europe, according to our Turkish news sources. The second satellite, Turksat 5B, is expected to launch later this year, also aboard a SpaceX rocket.

The Falcon 9 did just that Thursday night, after a delay of more than 45 minutes to assess the readiness of a downrange tracking station in Gabon.

The Falcon 9 booster nailed its landing on the "Just Read the Instructions" drone ship in the Atlantic about eight-and-a-half minutes after the blast, completing the fourth space-and-back launch of the reusable rocket. An update on the recovery effort was not immediately available from SpaceX.
In the meantime, the Falcon 9 single-use upper stage conducted two engine burns before releasing the Turksat 5A spacecraft into the elliptical "supersynchronous" transfer orbit approximately 33 minutes after the take-off.
U.S. military monitoring data showed that the Falcon 9 rocket launched Turksat 5A in an orbit at an altitude of 177 miles to 34,000 miles, with an inclination of 17.66 degrees.
