The Positive and Negative Impacts of Oil in Aberdeen

The Power Politics project has created new development education materials to meet this need, working closely with five schools in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City and partnering with two schools in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Pupils and teachers have been at the heart of developing the new materials, creating films and comic strips to bring to life the differences and similarities in their day to day lives, and to provoke debate and discussion about the opportunities and challenges that living alongside the oil and gas industry can bring.

The film 'The Positive and Negative effects of Oil in Scotland' was made with a class of S3 geographers from Robert Gordon's College. Although they felt that oil has mainly had a positive effect on life in Aberdeen, they wanted to delve deeper and discover that there have been some negatives too. A journalism student from Robert Gordon's
University, who was on placement at SHMU FM, a community radio station in Aberdeen, helped the pupils to hone their investigative skills. Input from a member of the WEA's Tea and Talk group also added a historical dimension to their research when they looked at old maps of Aberdeen to see how our city has changed since the 1960s.
