Part 1 - Introduction to Baka communities living around Dja Reserve.mov
Living Earth Foundation and Bristol Zoo Gardens have been working with communities living in and around the Dja Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon to make sure that they have a voice in the conservation and development debates that will shape their future. In this video, you can find out more about these forest-based communities and the challenges that they face.
The Dja Biosphere Reserve covers an area of over 5,000 square kilometeres in Southwest Cameroon near to the forests of the Congo Basin. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. During efforts to preserve the biodiversity of the forest, the native people living inside were forced out. The Baka people have lived in the the forest for generations. Their livelihoods have depended on hunting and gathering in the forest, but now they are having to adapt to living in the periphery of the forest closer to the roads and towns, in contact with more modern Bantu people.
Video produced by Dominick Reuter, Leah Garvin and Will Nunnally.
