Ian McKellen Interview 1984 Brian Linehan's City Lights
In this interview from 1984, Ian McKellen talks about his acting career on stage and on film: his one man show in Toronto, performing in the theater in London and in smaller communities in Great Britain, Princess Grace and Barbra Streisand drinking from the same cup backstage in his dressing room during the 1980 play Amadeus on Broadway, Milos Forman's 1984 film Amadeus and his role in London in the 1979 play Bent by Martin Sherman. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor In a Play at the 1981 Tony Awards for playing Amadeus in Amadeus.
Throughout the interview, he talks about Shakespeare and his love for performing Shakespeare. He discussed performances in Hamlet and a production of MacBeth, directed by Trevor Nunn and co-starring Judi Dench. Linehan calls him "an actor's actor," as they discuss other actors including Edward Atienza, Wilfred Lawson, Michael Horden and actress Peggy Ashcroft.
While he's a self-described "theater guy," he had several films to discuss: the 1969 film The Promise, the 1981 film Priest of Love with Ava Gardner, the upcoming film (1985) Plenty with Meryl Streep, Sting and Tracey Ullman. He talks about being offered the role of Ned Kelly in the 1970 film Ned Kelly, but reading about it going to Mick Jagger instead.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. Linehan, a stylishly gifted broadcaster, meticulously did all his own research and that, coupled with his knowledge and passion about film and filmmaking, puts him in a class all by himself.
