Who will win the space race? - week 34 Pascal's China Lens

Title: Who will win the space race?
Website: https://www.pascalcoppens.com/

CONTENT: The video talks about how China has been fuelling the space race with NASA since 1999, and is now at the forefront of space exploration. I mention about the space decoupling and how private space programs will be the next race. Talk about Mars, the moon, solar farms, quantum satellite, China space station and F.A.S.T., the largest telescope in the world.

TRANSCRIPT
Don't you feel how fascinating and exciting space exploration is these days?
I mean we've all looked at the Mars rover,
the Perseverance rover that landed on Mars just two weeks ago.
The whole world was watching and this is all about maybe finding life out there.
Now, what is China doing?
So I'd like to give you some insight on China's space program
as well on the space race that is going on between the US and China right now.
It all started in 1999, this was 22 years ago.
At that time, I was selling signal processing equipment into China
I was also selling into the Beijing University of Aerospace and Avionics called Beihang.
I had these rocket scientists of professors who on their desks all had this model of the Shenzhou 1.
The Shenzhou 1 was the first space shuttle that they sent into orbit,
everybody was so proud at that university of what they've achieved.
But this was just the first one, it really changed four years later in 2003.
That's the moment when China sent the first man into space, he's called Yang Liwei.
This person became an instant hero because although the US did it like 50 years ago,
China was now a country that could also send somebody into space.
So this started a different program and a different attitude towards space,
they started commercializing all these launches that they were doing, not just for China but for every country in the world
that wanted to use their platform in order to send a satellite into orbit.
They became very very experienced in sending all these shuttles into space, to do all these launches
and they even made some money out of it because it was commercially very interesting.
This is where they got their experience and they got better and better every year.
Now, 2011 is the year that everything changed for China when it comes to space,
that is the year where the US said that China would not be allowed to dock at the International Space Station (ISS).
This was a big deal for China because they were all about spaces for humanity,
"We should share this information, we should do things together, we should use this to save the planet."
But at that point the US said, "No we're gonna decouple from China."
What that means is that this started the space race,
so it was actually the US that started the space race with China, not China with the US.
The year after in 2012, China sent their own module, their own space station into orbit and this was called Taikong.
"Tai" means extreme or big and "Kong" means space,
so Taikong in Chinese means "outer space" and they sent this into orbit.
Then a year later in 2013, they sent three astronauts
and they're actually called "Taikonauts" because of Taikong (outer space).
These Taikonauts, all three of them went to dock this module which was called Taikong.
There was even a woman in there
and so this was also very big news on every front page in China, "The First Chinese Woman in Space."
So that is the moment where China really started to ramp up, they proved that they could dock a space station.
This wasn't very operational yet, it was just a test but it worked very well.
In 2022 next year, that's the year where they will have their own space station called Tiankong.
"Tian" means heaven and "Kong" is space so Tiankong is sky.
Tiankong will be the international space station of China,
it's going to be about 400 kilometers above Earth and this is going to be the same in the international space station.
Now, China has been doing other things.
The last years, what they've mainly been doing is commercializing these launches.
In just the last five years, you saw it really grow exponentially whereas NASA pretty much stopped
because there wasn't much of a budget anymore.
China sent 140 launches over the past five years and just last year in 2020, they sent 39 out there for 89 programs.
So big things in China.
In 2021, this year, they're going to send another 40 and out of those 40 that they will launch, 7 of them will be private
so not from the government.
