India has added Siliserh Lake (Rajasthan) and Kopra Reservoir (Chhattisgarh) to the list of wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, making Siliserh Lake India’s 96th Ramsar Site. The recognition highlights India’s growing commitment to wetland conservation and sustainable environmental management.
Siliserh Lake, located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan near the Sariska Tiger Reserve, is a human-made freshwater lake constructed in 1845. Situated in a semi-arid region, the lake plays a crucial role in water security, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity conservation. It also supports several important species, including the River Tern, Black Stork, and Tiger.
Kopra Reservoir, located in the upper catchment of the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh, is an important wetland ecosystem that supports migratory and resident birds. Species such as the Greater Spotted Eagle and Egyptian Vulture depend on this habitat for feeding and nesting.
Ramsar Site designation provides international recognition, promotes the “wise use” of wetlands, and strengthens conservation efforts through policy support and global cooperation. This development is highly relevant for UPSC Prelims and Mains, especially under Environment, Ecology, and Geography.
