The Supreme Court of India has stayed its earlier order accepting the Centre’s controversial 100-metre height definition for the Aravalli Hills, amid serious concerns that the rule could leave large parts of the fragile hill ecosystem vulnerable to mining and other activities. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant decided to put the earlier directions in abeyance and ordered the formation of a new expert committee with domain specialists to resolve key ambiguities.
The Court flagged multiple issues for review, including how many hills would be excluded under the 100-metre rule, the exclusion of areas where hills are more than 500 metres apart, and the potential impact of mining in zones left outside the Aravalli definition. Data from the Forest Survey of India suggested that only about 8.7% of Aravalli hills would qualify under the 100-metre benchmark, raising alarms over environmental protection. The Central Empowered Committee and the amicus curiae had earlier warned that this approach could fragment the Aravalli range and weaken its ecological integrity.
The case has major implications for mining regulation, environmental governance, and conservation across Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi. It is also significant for UPSC aspirants as it highlights the intersection of environmental law, federal governance, and sustainable development.
