Ask A Pelvic Pain Specialist | What is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?

Dr. Obzjeta, a former pelvic pain specialist at PRM in Los Angeles, explains IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), including symptoms, potential causes, and treatment options.

At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine™, we believe that the millions of women and men who suffer from pelvic pain should have access to care that provides relief. We don’t believe “a glass of wine will fix it” or that “it’s all in your head”. We will never abandon you – and from leadership to the front office to every pelvic pain specialist you meet, so much of our team has been in your shoes and believes the pelvic pain patient deserves better. This belief is what unifies us all at PRM.

Since 2017, PRM has provided an innovative solution to a health crisis that affects 15% of women and 10% of men. Persistent pelvic pain is often overlooked, untreated, and misguided. At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms.

We offer a proprietary, simple, office-based procedure to treat the symptoms of chronic pelvic pain. The PRM Protocol™ consists of a series of pelvic nerve and muscle treatments to directly target inflammation in the pelvis and nerve pain. Depending on the condition causing your pelvic pain, other modalities may be needed in addition to our treatment.

Hey everyone, it's Dr. Obzejta here at Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine. Today we're talking about IBS. So IBS stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It can be seen in males or females. Typically it's going to present with changes in bowel habits, so constipation or diarrhea. Typically there's a lot of abdominal bloating and some discomfort.

Sometimes even patients can start to experience rectal urgency and mucousy stools. It is a diagnosis of exclusion, so it is pretty difficult to diagnose just because there's no specific test or imaging we can do to You know, get that diagnosis. So a lot of patients do kind of live with it without being specifically diagnosed with IBS.

We don't really know the cause of it, but it's definitely multifactorial. No diet, stress, altered gut microflora, psychosocial factors, food sensitivities, food allergies, can all play a role in it. Basically anything that's causing inflammation in the gut can lead to IBS symptoms. But, IBS can also lead to pelvic floor dysfunction.

Just because with overactive tight or even weak muscles, we could start getting pelvic floor dysfunction. So that's why we screen for it here at pelvic rehabilitation medicine.
