AMA Dr. Ally | How Do I Advocate for Myself as a Patient?
How do you advocate for yourself as a patient? Dr. Ally explains why it's important and ways that you can do so.
Dr. Allyson Shrikhande is a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, Chief Medical Officer of Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, and an expert in women’s and men’s health and sexual health. A leading expert on pelvic health and a respected researcher, author and lecturer, Dr. Shrikhande is a recognized authority on female and male pelvic pain diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Shrikhande is passionate about this cause and dedicated to helping women and men with pelvic pain who often suffer without anyone willing to listen, understand or find the cause of their pain.
At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day!
At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms.

Hi everyone, Dr. Ally here. It is really important to advocate for yourself as a patient. You know your own body, you live in it, you know it well, and it's important to listen to your body. And if what a provider is saying does not make sense with what's going on in your body, then continue to ask questions, to try to understand, as well as continue to seek the answers that you need to, that make sense, with any of the symptoms that you're having.
Remember, you know yourself better than anyone. Being your own advocate is the best thing you can do for yourself, your health, and your wellness.
