Oreshek Fortress is an ancient Russian fortress on Orekhovy Island ( Swedish": Nöteborg - Noteborg ) at the source of the River Neva , opposite the town of Shlisselburg in the Leningrad region .

The fortress was founded in 1323 by Prince Yuri Danilovich , the grandson of Alexander Nevsky .
In the 15th century, after the subordination of the Novgorod Republic to the Moscow principality , the fortress was completely rebuilt and became the first multi-tower structure in the north of Russia. During the Russian-Swedish wars, it was repeatedly attacked by Sweden .
In September 1611, the Swedish troops laid siege to the fortress for nine months. In May 1612 the castle surrendered...
During the Northern War, the Russian army laid siege to the castle. Following a 13 hour assault, the Russian regained the fortress.
With the construction of Kronstadt in 1723 the fortress lost its military significance and was transformed into a political prison...The first prison building, now the Old Prison was a one-story building with ten single cells. It became the place of imprisonment for the Decembrists... From 1884 the leaders of the revolutionary organisation " Narodnaya Volya" were imprisoned here. In the same year a new prison building housing 40 prisoners was constructed in the prison years by the wall facing Lake Ladoga. The old prison cells being used for solitary confinement. Prisoners awaiting execution were housed in these cells, including among others, the brother of Lenin, Alexander Ulyanov.......
