The city of Yakutsk is the capital city of the Sakha Republic, Russia and is located a mere 450 km from the Arctic Circle...
The original settlement was founded in 1632 as a fort on the banks of the River Lena, one of the three great rivers of Russia that flows into the Arctic Ocean. Yakutsk did not grow into a city until the discovery of large reserves of gold and other minerals in the 1880s and 1890s. As a result, becoming a major port on the River Lena

With an average temperature of −8.8 °C (16.2 °F), Yakutsk is the second coldest major city in the world after Norilsk, but Yakutsk sees colder temperatures in the winter: -41.5 °C (-40.8 °F)
