Mickey Rooney Jr. - LISTEN TO ME BABY (1966)

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Emerald 317) Talk about an elusive piece of 1960's pop/jazz on vinyl.....this disc by Mickey Rooney Jr. appears to be the only known 45 rpm release on the Barney Kessel owned, Emerald Records. Distributed by Phil Spector's Philles Records, Kessel issued an LP on the label in 1965 entitled, 'The fantastic Guitar Of Barney Kessel On Fire'. Another Kessel LP on Emerald, 'Barney Kessel With Strings' has been documented but any evidence of its existence has not been forthcoming. 'Listen To Me Baby' b/w 'Till You' are both produced by Mickey Rooney Jr.'s stepdad, Barney Kessel who also composed the A-side and wrote the B-side with his wife (and Mickey's mom), B.J. Baker. Although the song, 'Till You' was registered in the 'Catalog Of Copyright Entries' on January 24, 1967 making the release of the Emerald single to have likely been in late 1966, the overall production style sounds to be from 1965. Regardless, 'Listen To Me Baby' is quite impressive for the 18 year old singer. Barney Kessel recruited his Wrecking Crew pals to play on the session and had B.J. Baker provide the background vocal. Both jazzy and pop, the slick little two minute and nine second A-side is a tune that came and went into obscurity with the blink of an eye. When the disc ever rarely appears for sale, they are only white promotional copies, which makes one wonder if true stock copies were ever even manufactured.
