The Road to KUMRAT VALLEY : Pakistan’s Favorite Summer Destination -- PART 2

IN THIS VIDEO:

Upon reaching the main road en-route to Kumrat Valley, we were apprehended by the manning soldiers at the checkpoint so we camped-out along the road to spend the night. Later, Boss Akif, decided to change our destination. This time, instead of Kumrat Valley, we are going to Chitral Valley. In the morning, we stopped-by the flowing water on the road side to wash and brush teeth before heading to Chitral.

After hours of travel, we finally reached the 4.4 - kilometer Lowari Tunnel that cuts the road distance to Chitral instead of passing the dangerous Lowari Pass road. But Akif made an abrupt decision to pass on this dangerous road instead of getting into the tunnel.

After a few hours drive, we reached the peak of the Lowari Pass and stopped-by to prepare for lunch. A couple of hours later, we drove back to Upper Dir Town, after Akif's got a tip from a friend telling him that we can now proceed to Kumrat Valley.

Storyline:

Eight young men and boys went for an out of town trip to Kumrat Valley—a scenic tourist’s spot in Northern Pakistan known for its towering Deodar forest trees on the level ground adjacent to a majestic river.

The boys, all coming from the Alo Village in Katlang, Mardan of Pakistan were all first timers to this trip and no one had the better idea on how to navigate the road without being apprehended by the manning checkpoints along the way, and worst, being pushed back and later to change destination due to the threat of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Aggravating the problem is the extremely difficult road along the way that is oftentimes next to impassable by any vehicle especially upon nearing the main valley.

Speaking of vehicle though, the team had only managed to get the service of Mr. Suzuki as a carrier – a 32-year old Pakistan-made Suzuki Mehran Mini Pick-up truck owned and driven by one of our peers.

Mr. Suzuki was not only the most affordable that we could have but also the only one available for hire at that very moment as most people who owned vehicles in the village were also going out-of-town during the peak of Eid Al-Adha weeklong holiday.

Throughout the trip, in most of the journey, Mr. Suzuki nonetheless proved us that he was helpful. But when the going gets tough, the boys had to get down the vehicle and help Mr. Suzuki move forward especially on the narrow, steep and winding road.

Nevertheless, this trip is not only about the difficulty of the travel to Kumrat Valley and the drama attached to it. This out-of-town gig is also about fun, friendship and camaraderie. Moreover, it is about enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer and the thrill of the unpredictability of the journey.
