THROWING GROOMS INTO THE WATER ON WEDDING DAY: A Pakistani Village Wedding Tradition
In a typical western wedding, the groom’s taking of his bride from her parents should be his most awaited part. In this village wedding tradition, however, it may be his most dreaded part. For at this very moment, he will be tested not by his in-laws but by his closest friends in front of a cheering crowd.
On the way to the home of the bride, some of the most bizarre traditions can happen to the groom. There is always a strong chance that he can be thrown into a river or if the place is away from a river, his clothes can be ripped-off by his friends excitedly awaiting for this to happen. In some instances, he can also be pelted with eggs.
This culture according to tradition is to test the groom’s patience and agility by his bosom friends before he could reach his bride’s home.
This occasion despite being locally referred to as a wedding, is actually a reception of the closed-door wedding rites, at least, in the western point of view. An occasion like this is usually attended merely by family members of both parties that is held a couple of days earlier.
By default, each of the couple here is already married, as the Nikkah (or Muslim nuptial ritual) had already been read between the father of the bride and the groom with the bride listening to the reading of the ritual not far behind, probably in a secluded room.
Nevertheless, in this community, an occasion like this is still called a wedding.
