Porsche 996 Restoration - Part 9 - Steering Rack Removal & Sub-frame Work
Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Porsche project.
It's been great talking to you guys over the channel and hearing about your own cars and work. It's great to be in contact with people from all over the world.
In this episode I tackle the front sub-frame and break it down for refurbishment. In the process I discover a stripped thread and a couple of brackets which need replacing/fabricating. All of which goes on the 'to do' list.
The steering rack is another story tho. Anyone who owns a 996 will know (or will find out) that one of the most potentially problematic issues is not the IMS bearing, but the rack. The longer I spend on this part of the project, the more I understand how much of an issue it is. Namely, the power steering lines entering the rack, and the fusion between alloy and steel which occurs over time. Add to that the cost of replacement parts, and indeed the availability of them, and you have a mini project within a project on your hands. Even more so if you are doing the work on a budget.
But progress is being made and it's all part of the process. As I mentioned before, this is not 'turning' into a major project, it is one! So lots (and lots) more content to come.
Keep the questions and tips coming and as always thanks for your support and I hope you enjoy the video.
Have a great day whatever you are up to!
Regards
Joël
