Making Pumpkin Butter in the 1800s |Traditional American Fall Food|
We take our pumpkin (and apple!) butter seriously around here. Pumpkins are native to the Americas where they are still loved to this day. Pumpkin butter started to become popular sometime in the early 1800s. The Western Farmer and Gardener Horticultural Magazine (1845) published a recipe for pumpkin butter where it said that if properly stored this delicious spread could be preserved for 7 years!
