Making Donuts From 1803 "Dough Nuts"
Donuts did not get their modern shape until the 1840s. Before then donuts, or dough-nuts as they were called, were fried in balls to resemble nuts. Eventually donuts started to be made with holes in the center so that they would not be raw in the center, a common problem with frying them in a nut shape. If you find that your dough nuts are raw in the center try to make them smaller.
