Paul Robeson : An Eriskay Love Lilt (1938) : new restoration
0:00 Na Casaidigh : Bheir mi o (last verse only)
1:02 Paul Robeson : An Eriskay Love Lilt : Rec 1938
People usually consider this song to be Scottish but, in fact, it's origins are in Ireland.
The song was collected from the singing of Mary MacInnes on the Scottish isle of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides, by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser who added her own version of the lyrics, in English, and it was published in 1909 with the title "An Eriskay Love Lilt"..
The original Irish version of the song is called Bheir mi o (pronounced ver me o) and just to get a flavour of it I've started the video with the last verse sung in Irish Gaelic by Na Casaidigh (The Cassidys) an Irish family group who play and sing traditional Irish music. This is followed by Paul Robeson's beautiful 1938 recording of An Eriskay Love Lilt.
A translation to English of the original Irish song is as follows;
I've gone away, oh dear one
I've gone away, oh dear one
I've gone away
I'm miserable and missing you
Many's the cold and wet night
I went out traveling on my own
Until I reached the place
Where the love of my heart lived
Chorus
There was no music in my harp
There was no strength in my fingers
Until you told me of your love
And I found my poem.
