It's quite a varied mixture of music recorded over a long period of time. I've tried to get the best possible sound from the old mono recordings but, of course. it's still no match for the more recent stereo recordings.
The words of Come by the hills were actually written by a Scottish gentleman when he was holidaying in Ireland and he set them to the melody of the beautiful old traditional Irish song Buachaill o'n Éirne Mé (I'm a boy from Ireland). The song has another verse, not included on this recording of the Fureys. It is;
Come by the hills to the land where legends remain.
Where stories of old fill the air and may yet come again,
Where the past has been lost and the future is still to be won,
And the cares of tomorrow can wait till this day is done.
Shane MacGowan of the Pogues (The singer on the right on The Irish Rover), perhaps surprisingly, has written some very nice songs the best known being Fairy Tale of New York which in recent years has been voted in certain polls, the best Christmas song and has been named as the most played Christmas song.
The Fields of Athenry has been adopted by Irish football and and rugby fans and can always be heard ringing out from the crowd during matches.
Ronan Tynan of The Irish Tenors had a very challenging start to his life. He was born with phocomelia, causing both of his lower legs to be underdeveloped. His legs were unusually short, his feet were splayed outward, and he had three toes on each foot. At age 20, after a back injury from a car accident which made it impossible for him to continue using his prosthetic legs, he had his legs amputated below the knee. He was fitted with new artificial legs and went on to represent Ireland in track and field events in Paralympics and other competitions and won many gold, silver and bronze medals. After voice training he later joined the Three Irish Tenors. He sang at the funerals of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
The following note is for my Irish YouTube friend Joe and any other listeners who do not have sight but have the wonderful facility on their computer to convert text to speech.
The first piece by the Chieftains is a video and they are joined by two wonderful young Irish dancers.
The Irish Rover by the Dubliners and The Pogues is also a video and it's of a performance on the Late Late Show.
The rest of the recordings are audio only, accompanied by photos of the artists.
