Isolating Bacteria from Marine Sponges
Dr. William Mavengere gives a simplified protocol for the isolation of a wide range of bacteria from marine sponges. This protocol can be adapted to isolate bacteria from a wide range of marine samples as well as terrestrial samples.
Marine sponges are roughly ground, releasing bacteria within the tissue, these bacteria are serially diluted and plated onto selection agar as well as enrichment broths.
These agar plates and broths can then be incubated until bacterial colonies are visible, after which time they can be screened for the presence of antibiotic activity.
