Beethoven: Symphony No 8 (1936) Weingartner/VPO
Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony no. 8 in F Major, Op. 93
1. Allegro vivace e con brio (0:07)
2. Allegretto scherzando (7:27)
3. Tempo di Menuetto (11:11)
4. Allegro vivace (15:23)
Felix Weingartner, conductor
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Recorded on February 25, 1936
in the Grosser Musikvereinsaal, Vienna
The Eighth Symphony is sandwiched between two of Beethoven's most popular works; the lyrical Seventh and the mighty Ninth. Interestingly he turns back to his classical roots once again. The Minuet returns, and we find thematic material that could easily have come from his First Symphony and other early works. Beethoven did this before in his symphonic output, going back to his roots before moving on to new heights in the form.
As is the case with his other performances of Beethoven's symphonies, Weingartner finds depths and delights that are uniquely his own here, and once again with exceptionally good sonic fidelity for the 1930s.
