Turning the Compost Pile - Saturday, 2012-05-12

This pile began with nothing but leaves from the fall of 2011. They sat in plastic bags all winter. I dumped them all in a pile sometime toward the end of winter (here in Texas) and, early spring. I think it was February or March.

As I learned more about what goes into a compost pile, I began to add additional ingredients. A few shovels of compost left over from an earlier purchase, some kitchen scraps, a bunch of coffee grounds from Starbucks and, a few shovels of left over wood chips.

After adding the coffee grounds, I noticed a significant change the pile's composition. It began to turn darker in color and, some of it began to look more like soil. It also started to "smell like dirt" when it was turned.

I also purchased a thermometer around that time and noticed an increase in the pile's temp. It reached as high as 130 degrees. At the time of this turning, it had been hovering around 110 degrees.
