March 2023 NWMA Meeting | Safety At Sea, led by Scott and Jeff

Seven NWMA members attended Offshore Safety at Sea in Bainbridge, WA that included chapters 1-15 of the US Sailing Offshore Safety at Sea and a full day live course that took place a few days before our multihull meeting. They share some high points to help keep our friends a bit safer on the water including their experiences swimming with their gear on. The Lifesling, examples of 3 lifejacket types, and other available accessories are demonstrated. Topics include;
1. MOB, Cold Immersion Stages and the uncontrollable effects of the ‘Gasp’ reflex
a. Proper lifejackets are key
b. 1-10-1 Rule
c. Equipment recommended on the life jacket : “What you have on you is
what you are going to have in the water”
d. Getting them back onboard
2. Personal EPIRB vs. DSC and AIS transponders
a. Who receives the signal first
b. Maintenance
c. Where to install the transponder to always be on the ready.
3. Best Mayday procedures
a. Best Mayday order call
b. Additional radio calls for non-life threatening emergencies PAN- PAN
4. How to properly ‘Fake a line’ for throwlines and the Lifesling2 with
demonstrations
5. Correct fire suppression for your boat
a. B/C vs. ABC – where they work best
b. A fire blanket use and proper location
6. Free weather sources!
a. Each location, how frequently they are updated and the duration of the
report.
