Well, Elon Musk has stated this repeatedly on X, not just once, but many times. And now, with the success of Artemis II, that vision feels more real than ever.
Because we’ve just shown China, and the rest of the world, how close we’ve come to the Moon. Just 4,067 miles. That’s how close the crew got to the lunar surface… the very place humanity has dreamed of returning to for decades.
In a way, we’re already halfway through the race to beat China back to the Moon before 2030. But they are still very much in this fight.
Because this year, China is preparing to respond. Their upcoming Chang’e-7 mission, expected to launch around August, isn’t just another flyby. This time, they’re going for a full operation, with an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and even a mini flying probe, all working together to study the Moon’s geology and resources.

No humans onboard. Not yet. But this is groundwork. A critical step toward building a future lunar base.
And if Chang’e-7 succeeds, they could move even further ahead. So here we are. China. NASA. SpaceX. All chasing the same goal, building a presence on the Moon. But who leads?
Well, if this race were only about speed, the answer wouldn’t be so clear. Because this isn’t just a race of who gets there first. It’s a race of scale.
And that’s where SpaceX changes everything. In a recent statement, Elon Musk made it clear: “SpaceX will ultimately transport millions of tons of cargo to the Moon to build a self-sustaining city there. Not a base—a city.” And the reasoning? He explained it in another post: “For those unaware, SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years.”
