Kings Park Psychiatric Center: Building 94 (laundry facility)

#KingsParkPsychiatricCenter #asylum #urbanexploration

Prior to the establishment of Kings Park Psychiatric Center in 1885, New York City’s mentally ill were treated at the Kings County Lunatic Asylum in Brooklyn. When conditions at the asylum became unbearable due to overcrowding, lack of funding, and maltreatment of patients, and with the passing of the State Care Act in 1890, New York State assumed responsibility for the care of it's mentally ill. As a result, Kings County purchased 873 acres of land in the hamlet of St. Johnland (now Kings Park). The hospital would grow from two permanent cottages to 150 buildings before closing in 1996.

Building 94 served as the laundry facility for the entire hospital. It consisted of three floors - main work floor, washing floor, and the sorting floor. At the height of operation, Building 94 would process 170,000 pounds of laundry per week.
