Abandoned Adirondack Mining Village | Tahawus, NY

#TahawusUpperWorks #abandonedadirondacks #urbanexploration

In 1826, prospectors discovered iron ore deposits near the headwaters of the Hudson River. Together they started a mining operation that was extracting ore at the rate of 12-14 tons per day. By 1857, mining operations ceased when a series of circumstances led to the abandonment of the village. The most impactful was the fact that impurities in the iron ore, later discovered to be titanium dioxide, hindered the production process. Ironically, the titanium dioxide that hindered mining operations in the 1800s served as the impetus for the reopening of the mine prior to WWII. In 1962 after years of success, workers were transferred away, turning the village into a ghost town.

These cottages are the few remains.
