Antimicrobial Iodine to Complement Fluoride in Routine Oral Health Care

New opportunities for oral health have arisen due to the availability of a 10% povidone-iodine OTC product cleared by the FDA for oral tissues. This has prompted important questions about the relationship of iodine to routine dental care. Here we will review the mechanisms and scientific evidence of iodine’s impact on orthodontics, clear aligners, implant health, periodontal health, sealants, restorations, antimicrobial resistance, and more. We will describe why single use packets are unfortunately necessary, and why it is reasonable – and safe – to have patients apply iodine to themselves at home.

Following the course, attendees will be able to:

1. Describe the clinical trial evidence for the effect of 10% povidone-iodine on caries prevention, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis.
2. Explain to patients the safety profile of 10% povidone-iodine, and screen for contraindications.
3. Explain to colleagues the anticaries mechanisms of iodine and its relationship to fluoride.
