Double Manor steal the show | Severn Valley Railway 'Spring Steam Gala' 21/4/2025

It crept up on us this year, but yes it's time once again for the Severn Valley Railway's 'Spring Steam Gala'. One of our favourite events of the calendar, this time around was a little different to usual being held over the four days of the Easter Weekend in April.

Boasting an all large engine line up this year, the SVR pulled together the Spring Gala amidst the sad severing of the line north of Hampton Loade due to a land slip back in January, stranding most of the home fleet in Bridgnorth. Despite the set backs, 6 locos were in action supported by the DMU.

Staring the line up were three guests in the form of GWR new build Grange 6880 'Betton Grange making it's long awaited visit to the SVR since completion early last year, LMS Jubilee 45596 'Bahamas' returning after a successful visit last Autumn, and fellow class mate 45699 'Galatea' (running as scraped sister 45627 'Sierra Leone') making a rare foray onto preserved line metals.

Supporting the guests, was the lines resident DMU and BR Standard 4MT 75069 on local train duties, as well as the two resident GWR Manor's. 7812 'Erlestoke Manor' making it's last appearance before an extended time away at the West Somerset Railway, and 7802 'Bradley Manor's first public outing post overhaul.

Despite the limitations in place, the team did a fantastic job at providing a thoroughly enjoyable little Gala. Having elected to attend the Monday of the event, the weather forecast played against my plans. But with the added bonus's of the goods train in action, as well as the first sight of double headed Manor's on the SVR since 2012, it was well worth being at the line that day. Hope you enjoy!
