61306 ‘Mayflower’ under the semaphores | Steam Dreams to Goodwood Revival 10/09/2023

The branch lines of south coast are some of the last places on the national network where you can see semaphore signalling in use at a terminus station, but to see steam under them is an even rarer sight. Sunday September 10th would see steam return to the small seaside terminus of Littlehampton.

Locomotive services operates B1 61306 ‘Mayflower’ was in charge of a Steam Dreams run from London Paddington to Chichester in connection with the Goodwood Revival. After dropping off the punters, an extra mini tour was put on, which ran along the former LBSCR route to Brighton. The highlight of which was a visit to Littlehampton and a chance to see steam under the semaphores, in this still very much unchanged backwater of mainline system.

After reversing around Ford triangle and running along the coast to Preston Park diesel hauled, the B1 retraced its steps to Chichester to collect its passengers and head back to London. This gave a chance to see the train crossing the River Arun at Ford, and departing Chichester in the evening sunshine.
