What is the deal with the executive order to expand unemployment insurance? Will you get $400 per week or $300 per week ($1200/month) unemployment insurance? And what about stimulus checks?

We have some news on the unemployment insurance expansion through the federal executive order.

We did not know if the unemployment extension was going to be $400 per week, $600 per week, $200 per week, or some other amount. Now we know that the unemployment insurance executive order expanded $300 unemployment insurance. As long as your state unemployment insurance is giving you at least $100, you will get the federal unemployment insurance boost of $300.

So this means if you are making less than $100 per week on state unemployment insurance, you will not get the federal unemployment insurance boost of $300.

When will you get the unemployment insurance extension? It depends on your state when the unemployment extension will be rolled out, since some state unemployment insurance systems are old and will take a while to update the unemployment insurance payouts.

There will be retroactive backpay on the unemployment insurance boost, however, to August 1.

Also, the federal unemployment insurance boost is going to last only a few weeks since the unemployment insurance funding is not from a fund authorized by Congress. Congress needs to replenish the unemployment insurance fund if unemployment insurance will last longer than a few weeks. The unemployment benefits will run out otherwise.

So overall the Trump unemployment insurance boost is a temporary solution to the stimulus negotiations and is not going to be long lasting.

The stimulus checks are still in negotiations. Both parties have agreed that the stimulus checks will be in the next stimulus bill, but both parties have not agreed to when they will be passing the next stimulus bill with new stimulus checks and expanded unemployment insurance boost. We need Congress to act if we want unemployment insurance and stimulus checks to actually be more certain and permanent. Stimulus checks are likely coming sooner rather than later, however, as Trump told the treasury to begin creating the stimulus checks.
