Day 6: Dancing With Our Bellies

Let’s go straight for the center…. Belly Rolls, a staple of belly dance (go figure) AND one of the healthiest things we can do for our bodies! Our bellies house our most vital organs; the stomach, small & large intestines, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and spleen.
Just like muscles, these organs love to be massaged; after all, they are working hard like every second of EVERY DAY! When doing belly rolls we are massaging places that are otherwise quite difficult to touch. Simultaneously, we are building up a muscle awareness that helps protect our precious center. This is ‘at the core’ of why I often refer to Belly Dance as “Womb Wisdom Dance,” we are literally building intelligence in the womb space (aka our center, lower tan tien, sacral chakra… our BELLY).
Strengthening our center helps us become more resilient and anchored. Through belly rolls we are strengthening in this way, yet still keeping our center malleable, which helps us move through various challenges and emotions. In Chinese medicine/philosophy, the organs are related to the entire meridian system, which relates to our emotional well-being (gotta love holistic health practices!).
Think about it, or better yet, feel into it, if the energy in our bellies is stagnant so are our bowel movements (or lack thereof,) our center of gravity will be “off,” our menstrual cycle (for those whom it applies) will be irregular and a list of other imbalances can transpire. If we want to be balanced why not go straight for the center!? ;)
