1. Dome Antarctica
In 2010, the Landsat 8 satellite confirmed scientists' predictions: chilly. Icy. This desert broke the Vostok station's 1983 record of -92.3°C to become Earth's coldest place.

In the 1940s, abandoned Yukon hamlet Snag reached a record low temperature. In the extreme cold, locals saw their breath freeze and fall as white dust. Stranger still, voices travelled miles in the chilly dense air.
