Sea Lion Training in the Navy: Project Quick Find (Part One)

In June 1972, the Naval and Undersea Research and Development Center (NUC) in San Diego, California released a report titled Project Quick Find: A Marine Mammal System for Object Recovery. Objects get lost at sea and when that happens, the items are separated into one of two categories, objects that can be recovered and objects that cannot be recovered. It had been identified by researchers that using trained marine mammals showed very promising results when it came to Naval recovery missions. So the NUC had formed a development program using California sea lions as the Naval recovery system, emphasizing on the recovery of experimental mines. In September of 1969, the NUC received its first shipment of sea lions to begin the adaptation to captivity phase of the training program.
